The faculty and staff of C. L. Salter would like to congratulate two of its outstanding educators for the school year of 2011-2012.

J.S.U. Hall of Fame teacher is Ms. Eileen Joiner. Ms. Joiner brings many years of experience and dedication to the Talladega City School Sytem. Her caring personality makes her a wonderful candidate for this award.

Teacher of the Year for Salter Elementary is Ms. Ashley Campbell. Ms. Campbell is a very organized and efficient teacher. Her first grade students always seem to be well prepared for the second grade due to her hard work and energy.

Thank you ladies for representing our faculty well!

A & A/B Honor Roll Field Trip

Salter students enjoyed a fun-filled day at Sunshine Skating Rink as their reward for making all As or As & Bs. The students (and teachers =)) had a blast! We had over 120 students make good enough grades to participate in this exciting field trip!! Way to go students!!

Canned Food Drive

Students at C. L. Salter helped collect canned food for two local charities in Talladega-The Samaritan House and The Isaiah House. The canned food drive was held during the month of November. We collected 321 cans! Way to go students!!

PTO Open House is scheduled for Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. in the lunchroom. Parents are invited to visit their child's classroom.

We would like to encourage all Salter parents, grandparents and other adults to join our PTO. The cost to join is $3.00 for an individual or $5.00 per family. This is a great way to become involved in your child's education, as well as an opportunity to hear about the things that our school is involved in.

Grandparents are so important in the lives of all children. At .C.L. Salter we would like to cordially invite all grandparents to visit their grandchild's school and to set aside this important day to have lunch with your grandchild. It is such a joy to see all the smiling faces of the students as we depart the lunchroom when they have enjoyed that special time with their grandparents.

Beginning Tuesday, September 6, 2011 it is very important for every student that attends Salter School to be present. Beginning that day and for nineteen days to follow we need to have all students present if at all possible. This will help us with next year's teaching units which will allow our students to possibly have smaller classes for the following school year.

Parents you can help in this small way to improve your child's education by making sure they rest properly, eat a good breakfast and arrive at school on time. If they see school is important to you it will be important to them.

Dear Parents of Salter School Students,
It is time to celebrate the beginning of a new school year. Our school will begin, August 15th. We hope the following information helps the new school year to begin smoothly.

Orientation Times:
Kindergarten - August 11th - 5:30 p.m.
1st, 2nd and 3rd grade - August 11th - 5:30 p.m.
4th, 5th and 6th grade - August 11th - 6:30 p.m.

Orientation:
Parents are invited to meet with their child's teacher for an orientation meeting. You will report to your child's classroom. This is NOT drop in. You will need to be here and stay until the ending time for your grade level (around 45) minutes. If possible, please do not bring siblings. This is an important time for parents to fill out all needed paperwork. We also want to show off our new renovations!

Today was a very special day at C.L. Salter Elementary School. We celebrated the life of our former 4th Grade student, Kitris Hann. The agenda was as follows: Mrs. Griffin welcomed & presented a plaque that will hang in the school, Mr. Campbell addressed a proclamation in honor of Kitris Hann Day, Ms. D. Smith presented the yearbook dedicated in memory of Kitris, Mrs. Varnedore presented the butterfly bushes that will be planted on the school grounds honoring Kitris, 1st Grade teachers released butterflies, Ms. Hare presented a letter from Ronald McDonald House, Ms. Ensley & Ms. Joiner presented blankets (which will be signed by Gene Chizik & donated to charaties), 4th Grade students gave one word tributes, and to conclude the memorial, everyone sang "Angels Among Us" by Alabama. Concluding the ceremony, balloons were released to greet Kitris in Heaven & let her know C.L. Salter misses her every day. Kitris, you will be forever missed, but NEVER forgotten!

Marianna Greene Henry Special Equestrians is a world-renowned and Premier Accredited center through the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. Visit to the Murals of Talladega College and Savery Library

The city of Talladega has such rich history and we were able to visit one such place with the Ambassadors. Students toured the library and heard the story of The Amistad Murals and The 1942 Mural Series. The Amistad Murals were commissioned by the Board of Trustees of Talladega College to pay homage to the American Missionary Association for its role in founding Talladega College. The murals were completed and unveiled at the dedication of the newly constructed Savery Library on April 15, 1939.

On April 26, 1942, a new series of three murals were unveiled and dedicated as part of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the College. The new murals depict an Underground Railroad Scene, the opening Day of school at Talladega College and the building of Savery Library.

Our book fair is coming! An amazing selection of books are on their way to Salter's library for the book fair. The book fair will be October 11-15 in the library. Fire Safety at Salter

Today, Kindergarten through 3rd grade were able to be a part of a fire safety program. The students were able to see Captain Ronnie Davis in full uniform. Every grade participated in planting vegetables in our raised garden beds. Each grade level planted a different vegetable in their garden. The students were responsible for hoeing their garden to break up the dirt, planting their seeds in the garden, and watering their garden on this day. This will teach our students how to cultivate thier own garden in the future. This also teaches the students the life cycle of a plant/vegetables. Once the vegetables have grown completely, the lunchroom ladies will supply the students with their garden-grown vegetables!

During the month of May the students have participated in "Cash for the Classroom" sponsored by the First National Bank of Talladega. As an incentive, Coach Darby agreed to take the top money winner from each grade level on a fishing trip. The students caught over forty fish and of course, had a lot of fun for their hard work. Students, faculty, staff, retired faculty members and parents had a very good time celebrating the anniversay of C. L. Salter's 50 years of existence. The Salter Ambassadors began the program by telling us 50 facts from the beginning of Salter to the present day. The entire lunchroom was decorated in an outstanding birthday party theme. Students participated in the twist and later enjoyed birthday cake and old - fashioned coke floats.

We dedicate the 2009 - 2010 Yearbook to Ms. Jenny Hare. Ms. Hare has served as a fourth and second grade teacher for the past thirty years. She has helped to make a difference in the lives of many children. Ms. Hare has a heart of gold and is very active in various charities such as St. Jude's and Relay for LIfe.

C. L. Salter faculty and staff would like to congratulate first grade teacher, Mrs. Thielker on the arrival of her bundle of joy, Brooksly Ada Thielker. Brooksly was born on April 5, 2010 weighing 8lbs. 3 oz. and was 20 1/2 inches long. We wish both mom and baby the best!

Archery Fund Raiser

Thanks to Coach Darby for providing a creative way for the students at Salter to attend the Archery Competition. Students were allowed to purchase pieces of tape and vote for the teacher or staff member they would like to see taped to the wall on Friday, March 5, 2010. The lucky winners were Ms. Ensley, fourth grade teacher, and Mrs. Griffin, our principal.

As you can imagine, the students really got into this event resulting in over 400 pieces of tape being sold. Ms. Ensley and Mrs. Griffin were great sports as each student who purchased tape was allowed a time to "tape them to the wall."

Black History Month

February is Black History Month. Our Black History committee has planned several special events such as speakers, morning readings, poster contests, skits and music, Soul Food lunch week, and African attire week. The celebration of Black History month will conclude with a grand program on February 26, 2010. Plan to attend to see all of the creative things the students have done this month.

Exciting things are happening for first grade students at Salter! Thanks to a grant written by our librarian, Mrs. G. Smith, first graders have a great new tool to help them enhance their reading and comprehension skills.

Along with a lot of hard work from the students and the use of the NEO 2 laptops, teachers are seeing AR scores really soar.

Trick or Treat

Kindergarten through second grade at Salter enjoyed Thursday morning Trick or Treating around the school. The students were able to wear their costumes and enjoyed getting candy for Halloween.

Kindergarten Visits the Pumpkin Patch

Kindergarten enjoyed a day at Sunshine Farms Pumpkin Patch. The students learned a lot at the educational barn and had an old fashioned duck race. At the petting farm the students were able to feed and pet all the farm animals. To end a great day, the students enjoyed a hayride and chance to pick their own pumpkin.

Smokey the Bear

The Leadership Talladega Team

The Leadership Talladega Team visited Salter School on October 7. They represented Talladega Super Speedway, The City of Talladga, Citizens BMC, The Chamber of Commerce, several area banks, and other local business groups. Dressed in their red Salter School t-shirts, the Student Ambassadors led a tour of our school covering subjects such as the Student Ambassador jobs, our 50th birthday, the art murals, our school making AYP, parent involvement, the Book Fair, our "Extra Extra Read All About It" bulletin board, the Hard Work Cafe, our vegetable garden, Kaboom Day artwork, the pond we plan to build on October 22, and many other wonderful facts about our school. The team ended their tour with a birthday celebration in the lunchroom complete with cake and party decorations. Salter School will be 50 years old this year. We enjoyed their visit so much!

Kaboom Play Day

Kaboom is a non-profit organization that helps communities build playgrounds and encourages play. Salter was invited by Kaboom to participate in a "play day" on September 25,2009. Play days are outdoor events that celebrate play. Salter was one of only 4 play days in Alabama.

Daisy the Cow - SouthWest Dairy Farmers

SouthWest Dairy Farmers provided a delightful visit with Daisy the cow to students at C. L. Salter Elementary School. Students learned that milk contains many nutrients such as niacin, riboflavin, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and protein. We also learned about the unique digestive system of Daisy and that she has four stomachs. Students enjoyed seeing Daisy in the milking parlor which is a 32 - foot dairy classroom that transports Daisy to schools and fairs.

Classes will begin for all students at C. L. Salter School. Students should report to the lunchroom and wait to be dismissed by their homeroom teacher. Our faculty and staff have worked throughout the summer to make this day a wonderful success for the students.

Talladega Speedway

Congratulations to the entire Salter student body for their hard work during SAT 10, ARMT, and dibels. The students were treated to a fun filled day at the Talladega Speedway. Loud cheers of excitement could be heard as the pace car sped passed the students with six of Salter's bravest teachers inside.

6th Graders Visit J.S.U.

Mrs. Bostick's and Mrs. Romine's sixth grade classes had a very informational visit to the campus of Jacksonville State University. The students were shown all around the campus and encouraged by the tour guides to study hard and keep their grades up! The trip ended with the students enjoying a meal together in the student commons area.

Fourth Grade Science Fair

The fourth grade held its annual science fair recently and enjoyed the support of both students and parents. Winners from Mrs. Ensley's class were 1st place: Jae-Lyn Russ, 2nd place: Antwan Hawkins, and 3rd place: Malachi Gooden. Honorable mention was Sakija Whitson.

In Ms. Joiner's class the winners were 1st place: Kelsey McMeans, 2nd place: Kenya McGowan, and 3rd place: Jayme Sanders. Honorable mention was Justin Reynolds.

Water Day

The Outdoor Classroom Committee did a marvelous job of planning the first ever Water Day at Salter. Students were challenged by faculty and staff to a game of kickball. Wow, can those teachers play a mean game of kickball! The score was 25 to 12 in favor of the teachers and faculty members. All the proceeds from the event will go towards the completion of Salter's Outdoor Classroom and bird sanctuary.

The Prize Patrol Visits Salter

Imagine the surprise to students, faculty, and staff as the "Talladega City Schools Prize Patrol" arrived on our campus. The prize patrol came with drums, balloons, and a very large check to be presented to teachers receiving mini grants from the Talladega City Schools Foundation. Congratulations to Mrs. Ensley, Ms. Hare, Mrs. Thielker, and Mrs. Bentley for receiving grants for their classrooms.

"Build - A Book"

Salter's "Build -A- Book" family night brought families together to create their very own book. We purchased "Klutz Build - a -Book" kits with Title I parent involvement funds. This was our first time to promote this event and didn't know what to expect. We could not believe how many families showed up! The entire cafeteria was filled with parents and students. Build - A - Book night provided the perfect setting for family time at our school. The teachers and families had lots of fun! Thanks to Mrs. Griffin and Mr. Campbell for hosting this event for students and parents.

Thank you to Mr. Tommy Moorehead for the beautiful painting that has been added to the Salter lunchroom. This project is being funded by a grant from the Heritage Hall Education Foundation. Be on the lookout! There is more to come with the Tuscan theme that has been chosen to make the lunchroom a more inviting place.
